‘Global Climate Lab:Widening the Circle’ invites you to join us for the unveiling of ‘Creative Climate Responses’ as part of the culmination of a year of Global Climate Labs. The online labs have brought together international climate researchers and artists to ask ‘how do you feel about the climate crisis?’, and in this final event we are widening the circle to include others who are interested in:

  • Exploring how expressing “expert feelings” on climate change changes the story.
  • Being part of a conversation about the power of art/science climate collaborations.
  • Re-contextualising climate activism and participating in research connecting to emotions as powerful catalysts for change.
  • Witnessing and celebrating the unveiling of ‘Creative Climate Responses’ from international artists

‘Widening the circle (December)’ will celebrate and share the artworks created by Christine Kettaneh (Lebanon) and Marega Palser (Wales, UK) in response to online Climate Labs in September and October 2023. We hope new understanding will come from our shared stories and experiences and give rise to further activism, art, and academic projects, as well as shedding light on the important role of emotions in our individual and collective responses to the climate crisis.

The “Climate Lab” began in 2022 at Swansea University, and is a transdisciplinary collaboration between scientists, engineers, academics from arts and humanities, and practising artists. The project arose in part from a simple question from a young child to a glaciologist – ‘how do you feel about the changes you observe in the Arctic?’ – but it was one which she had never been asked in her decades-long scientific career. The Labs have been created and facilitated by Emergence UK to explore and express “expert feelings” about climate change. The results of these workshops have been profound and moving, and have convinced us more than ever that the child’s question is perhaps one of the most important to ask in these times.

There will be an earlier ‘Widening the Circle’ event on November 16th, featuring the creative responses of artists Carolina Caycedo (Columbia/USA)and Marega Palser (Wales, UK). You are welcome to join either or both events.

Spaces on each of the events are limited – please sign up only if you know you will be able to attend! Thank you.
