Program

This year’s conference streams include:

  • Collaboration and Partnerships
  • Decolonization and Indigenization
  • Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Accessibility (EDIA)
  • Impact
  • Systemic Approaches

Opening keynote

This year’s opening keynote features Dr. Chika Stacy Oriuwa, a resident doctor in psychiatry at the University of Toronto. Named as one of Time magazine’s “2021 Next Generational Leaders,” Oriuwa is a medical trailblazer spearheading change in healthcare and beyond. She was named on Maclean’s Power 50 List in 2022 and was recently honoured in Mattel’s #ThankYouHeroes campaign, with a Barbie doll made in her image to commemorate her contributions as a frontline healthcare worker.

Oriuwa will share insight and actionable strategies into transformative leadership, mental health and wellness, and igniting change to build a more equitable future for all.

Student panel

Join students from across Canada for a panel discussion and Q&A. Panelists will speak on mental health and well-being from a student lens, sharing experiences from their own educational journeys. Panelists will also highlight current challenges they see in post-secondary spaces as well as explore opportunities and solutions with fellow panelists and conference attendees.

Indigenous Elder panel

Panelists will discuss Indigenous perspectives on wellness. They will explore together how to co-create and contribute to supportive communities in post-secondary environments, as well as highlight barriers and explore solutions in delivering services to Indigenous communities and beyond.

Indigenous Counsellor panel

Featuring post-secondary Indigenous mental health and well-being professionals, this panel will discuss supporting student well-being informed by Indigenous traditions and ways of knowing and being. They will expand on therapeutic approaches and providing students in post-secondary with culturally appropriate services.

Panelists will also share their own experiences as Indigenous peoples as well as thoughts on what role settlers and non-Indigenous providers can play in providing relevant and safe spaces for Indigenous students.

Collaborations for Change is hosted by University of Calgary’s Campus Mental Health Strategy and Best Practices Network in Canadian Higher Education (BP-Net) with support from the Canadian Association of College and University Student Services (CACUSS)

Collaborations for Change 2023 is made possible through lead funding from the Rossy Foundation and in partnership with RBC Future Launch. It is supported in part by the Mental Health Commission of Canada and Health Canada.

More about Collaborations for Change

The idea of bridging the gap between research and practice has been around for many years and exists in various sectors. This is no different for mental health in post-secondary education.

Although many post-secondary institutions are using evidence-based mental health services, practices and programs, evaluation of these services at post-secondary institutions is sometimes lacking, given limited resources.

The potential for collection of rich data exists on post-secondary campuses and in student samples, which can be leveraged to inform campus mental health. The research literature in post-secondary mental health is relatively sparse and not commensurate to the attention this topic receives in the public and media.

The recent launch of the National Standard for Mental Health and Well-being for Post-Secondary Students provides a backdrop for the integration of research and practice on post-secondary campuses.

Opportunities for collaborations between researchers and clinical providers can fill this gap, especially as new partnerships between faculty and service providers to support post-secondary mental health are becoming more prevalent.
