As part of our fundraiser, we have decided to put our talks on free of charge. This is because we want to raise awareness of the fundraiser, and don’t want price to be a barrier for people’s education. Having said this, the aim of this fundraiser is to raise money to support the charity next year, so we’d encourage you, if you can, to make a donation to support our work. Thank you.

The justified excitement around using psychedelic substances to cure conditions ranging from eating disorders to post-traumatic stress disorder comes with a shadow. That shadow is the narrative around ‘trauma’. Rooted in the psychoanalytic tradition developed by cocaine user Sigmud Freud, in this presentation Julian Vayne will explore the problems that emerge when we focus on this way of understanding the psychedelic experience.

Let’s not forget kids, psychedelics are also about fun, exploration, appreciation and when conditions are right, mystical and transformative experiences, and the way we tell the story of what these drugs do directly affects how they work on us. So join Julian for a journey ‘in and through’ the language of trauma and into broader appreciation for these strange and wonderful substances.

Julian Vayne is a British independent scholar and author of books, essays, journals and articles in both the academic and esoteric press. He is the author of the celebrated Getting Higher: The Manual of Psychedelic Ceremony. In the 1990s Julian edited Britain’s best selling pagan newspaper Pagan Voice and in 2001 published one of the first books of the modern psychedelic renaissance, Pharmakon: Drugs and the Imagination.

Julian is a co-organizer of the psychedelic conference Breaking Convention, and a Trustee of The Psychedelic Museum Project. A founding member of the post-prohibition think-tank Transform, Julian sits on the academic board of The Journal of Psychedelic Studies. Growing up in the Britain of punk and then rave culture Julian immersed himself in the philosophy and techniques of magic.

Julian’s style emphasises curiosity, collaboration and creativity. Julian facilitates psychedelic ceremony, as well as providing one-to-one psychedelic integration sessions and support. His approach is informed by chaos magic, deep ecology and lineages within Wicca and Tantra.
