The API Office is a newly formed team whose goal is to establish Cigna and Evernorth as an indisputable leader in the creation and adoption of APIs and other related interaction models (events, streaming). The team will empower and support the Cigna and Evernorth technology and business teams on this journey. This team is a “center of enablement”, with a focus on collaboration with our partners in technology and outside of technology, in order to give these teams everything they need to ensure successful creation, deployment, and utilization of our API portfolio.

As a member of this team, the API Architect / Designer will help establish all aspects of the API program, from planning the API portfolio, creating “paved roads” for API engineering teams to ensure successful and consistent API design and delivery, and ensuring both external and internal adoption of those APIs are done successfully and efficiently.

Responsibilities may include

• Provide guidance and enterprise-wide influence to enable and drive the execution of API efforts

• Establish and manage API standards and guidelines for the enterprise

• Drive conformance to API standards and guidelines through creation of patterns, frameworks, reusable assets, and automation

• Research new API and integration techniques and technologies and drive their adoption in the enterprise

• Participate, and lead where appropriate, cross functional groups related to our API efforts

• Collaborate with Architecture peers, bringing API expertise to their efforts as needed

• Assisting product and engineering teams throughout the enterpise in their API design efforts

• Conducting API Design workshops to assist in API identification and strategy

• Establishing standard practices for API operations

• Performing API design and documentation reviews

• Defining API product and pricing strategies with business partners

• Providing sales support through presentations and solution architecture efforts

• Technical writing for API marketing and documentation

• Assisting with the strategy and evolution of both internal and external developer portals

• Assisting in the definition and promotion of the Cigna and Evernorth technical brands

• Mentoring of API architects and designers in the broader technology organization

• Presenting API related topics to both technical and non-technical audiences

Desirable qualifications

• Demonstrable experience in REST API Design

• Demonstrable experience with the Open API Specification

• Experience with other API interaction patterns and design approaches, such as GraphQL and BFF patterns

• Demonstrable experience in solution architecture

• Experience with API Security techniques and tools, particularly OAuth 2.0

• Experience with API technologies including API gateways, API management platforms, Service Mesh, and Developer Portals

• Experience in defining domain or enterprise level technology strategies

• Experience working in a highly matrixed organization effectively

• Experience delivering technical presentations to both technical and non-technical audiences

• Ability to speak in non-technical terms and explain technical concepts in crisp, clear, and plain terms

• Familiarity with HL7 FHIR

• Familiarity with streaming technologies, such as Kafka and Kinesis

• Familiarity with Amazon Web Services

• Able to drive API design in support of logical solution architecture

• Able to lead development of design patterns

• Able to play a tech lead role for major engineering initiatives

• Able to rationalize technical recommendation for directional decisions

For this position, we anticipate offering an annual salary of 120,100 – 200,100 USD / yearly, depending on relevant factors, including experience and geographic location.

This role is also anticipated to be eligible to participate in an annual bonus plan.
